Pripyat Kindergarten № 13 Goldfish

Kindergarten № 13, known as “Goldfish,” was a brand-new preschool built for the families of the nearby Jupiter Factory. It sits in a newer neighborhood of Pripyat, where many buildings were still under construction when the disaster hit. This article looks at how this modern school served the youngest citizens of the nuclear city for only a very short time.

The Jupiter Factory was a huge employer in the city and needed many workers to stay busy. To make sure mothers could return to their jobs, the state built the Goldfish nursery and kindergarten nearby. It was a common Soviet goal to have women take an active part in the workforce and public life. Parents could drop off their babies starting at just two months old, knowing the state would care for them while they worked.

Life at the Goldfish School
The building was quite large and could hold about 320 children at once. It served two groups: the nursery for toddlers up to three years old and the kindergarten for older kids up to age seven. Teachers here did more than just watch the children. They prepared them for the ten years of school that would follow. The main goal was to raise children to be good workers who would help build a “bright future” for the whole country.

A Modern District Interrupted
Because it was located in a fresh part of the city, the Goldfish school was very modern. However, the 1986 accident happened shortly after it opened its doors. Most of the apartment blocks surrounding the school were so new that people had only just moved in. Some buildings were not even finished yet. After the evacuation, the school was left behind along with the brand-new neighborhood, never to be used again.

What Stays Behind
Today, the Goldfish school is a haunting place to visit. Unlike the schools in the city center, this one feels even more tragic because it was so new. You can still find tiny beds, colorful murals, and learning tools scattered throughout the rooms. The nature in this part of Pripyat is very thick, and trees are already pushing through the windows of the lower floors. It stands as a frozen piece of history from a neighborhood that never got to grow up.

The empty halls of the Goldfish kindergarten show us a dream of a modern life that was cut short.
